MG To Launch Hyundai Creta and Maruti Ertiga Rivals In India

MG Motor India is planning to enter into the mid-size SUV and compact MPV segments sometime next year. According to a fresh media report, the British carmaker might bring in the MG ZS petrol and MG 360M MPV in the country. Both models were put up on display at this year’s Auto Expo in February. While the petrol version of the ZS compact SUV will be positioned against the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, the 360M will challenge dominance of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga.

Currently, the carmaker sells electric iteration of the ZS SUV in Excite and Exclusive variants priced at Rs 20.88 lakh and Rs 23.58 lakh respectively (all, ex-showroom). MG has started testing the petrol ZS that looks noticeably different than its electric counterpart. Upfront, the SUV features more angular headlamps and newly designed bumper. The alloy wheels, taillamps and rear bumper also appear different than the ZS EV.

While its overall interior layout and design will remain unchanged, the petrol version will get new control surfaces on the dashboard, a digital instrument display and a panoramic sunroof. Globally, the MG ZS is being offered with two turbocharged petrol (111bhp, 1.0L and 125bhp/163bhp 1.3L) and a naturally-aspirated petrol (106bhp, 1.5L) engine.

Talking about the MG 360M, the compact SUV is based on the China-spec Baojun 360 and measures 4615mm long, 1735mm wide and 1660mm tall. It sits on a 2750mm wheelbase, which is 10mm longer than the Ertiga. Under the hood, it’s likely to feature the 1.5L turbo petrol engine that also does duty in the Hector. The gasoline unit makes a top power of 103PS and 135Nm of torque. Transmission duties will be done by a CVT automatic gearbox. The carmaker might also offer Jeep’s 2.0L diesel engine.

In coming weeks, the British carmaker will roll out its most expensive SUV – the MG Gloster. The SUV comes packed with several segment first safety features including the auto park assist. This makes it India’s first Level 1 autonomous premium SUV.
