Maruti Suzuki’s Tata Punch Rival To Be Based On Baleno – Report

We have reported earlier that Maruti Suzuki on a compact crossover that will be based on the Baleno hatchback (codenamed YTB). According to a fresh media report, the Indo-Japanese automaker might enter into the micro SUV space with the Baleno-based model that will directly take on the soon-to-be-launched Tata Punch. In the company’s product lineup, the new Maruti mini SUV will sit below the Vitara Brezza and above the S-Presso.

While there is no official word on its launch timeline, the micro SUV is reported to debut sometime next year. The upcoming Maruti mini SUV is likely to be designed on the Heartect platform that’s said to be built with ultra and advanced high tensile steels. It’s claimed to assure better collision safety and allay damage to the vehicle. The same architecture underpins several Maruti Suzuki cars including Ignis, WagonR, S-Presso, XL6 and Ertiga.

It would be quite early to comment on its engine options. Though, the new Maruti mini SUV is reported to come with the 1.2L petrol engine that does duty in the Baleno hatchback. This motor can be had with and without 12V mild hybrid system.

Besides this, Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch the new-generation Celerio hatchback and Vitara Brezza in November 2021 and February 2022 respectively. The company will also give a mid-life update to its popular models including the Baleno hatchback, Ciaz sedan and Ertiga and XL6 MPVs. Talking about the updated Baleno, the premium hatchback will witness significant changes inside and out. Its engine setup, however, will remain unchanged.

The 2022 Maruti Baleno facelift will come with a new floating touchscreen infotainment system, a newly-designed dashboard and central console. Rumour has it that the hatchback might get connected car technology along with a semi digital instrument console, a new flat-bottom steering wheel with mounted controls and cruise control.
