Maruti YTB: A Baleno Based Compact Crossover In The Works

We reported earlier that Maruti Suzuki is readying an all-new compact crossover, which will be positioned against the Tata Nexon. A new media report reveals that the new Maruti compact crossover will be based on the Baleno hatchback. Codenamed ‘YTB’. the new model will be designed as a coupe SUV or a mini crossover.

Maruti Suzuki is planning to introduce around 5 new SUVs in the country by 2023. The company hipes to regain the market share in the UV segment, which it lost to Hyundai and Kia. By using the Baleno platform, Maruti Suzuki is aiming to save production costs and time spend on developing a brand new product.

The report cited two people close to development, which says that the new model has been referred as the ‘sister car’ of Baleno. This is the same strategy earlier adopted by Maruti Suzuki in the development of the XL6 6-seater MPV, which is based on the Ertiga. It will be the brand’s second offering in the sub-4 meter UV segment after Vitara Brezza, which will also receive a generation change in 2022. The current Brezza was launched in 2016.

Besides the new Maruti YTB compact crossover, the Indo-Japanese brand is likely to introduce the Jimny 5-door, a new mid-sized SUV, next-gen Vitara Brezza and an all-new C-segment SUV. The new mid-sized SUV and the C-segment SUV are expected to be jointly developed by Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corporation.

Maruti Suzuki is also planning to bring back its diesel cars in the country. If reports are to be believed, the company will introduce the diesel-powered Vitara Brezza and the Ertiga by mid-2021. The SUVs will use the BSVI compliant 1.5-litre diesel engine, which was briefly used in the Ciaz and the Ertiga in the BS4 form. In the BS4 form, this engine produces 94bhp and 225Nm of torque.
