Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to make a significant foray into the electric vehicle (EV) segment in the upcoming financial year 2024-25. Currently in its initial testing phase, the model has been spotted multiple times and is slated for production at Maruti Suzuki’s new manufacturing facility in Hansalpur, Gujarat. The Hansalpur-based manufacturing facility in Gujarat is set to serve as the production hub for Maruti Suzuki’s new electric SUV. In a noteworthy development, Suzuki Motor Corporation inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat government in March 2022. Under this agreement, the automaker plans to invest Rs 3,100 crore in the Hansalpur plant, earmarked for EV production. The facility is also intended to handle the export of the eVX model. While the specific production numbers at the Gujarat plant are yet to be finalized, Maruti Suzuki continues to expand its manufacturing capabilities.

Recently, Maruti Suzuki’s SMG plant reached a milestone with the production of its three millionth car on December 4, 2023. The facility, which produces popular models such as Swift, Tour S, Dzire, Baleno, and Fronx, caters to both domestic and international markets. Boasting an annual production capacity of 7.5 lakh units, the plant has been a cornerstone in the company’s success.

The automaker has confirmed that its inaugural electric SUV will be a “high-specification” model, featuring a 60kWh battery pack. It’s said to offer an impressive electric range of 550km on a single charge. Utilizing an all-new skateboard platform, the Maruti eVX SUV will measure around 4.3 meters in length, aligning with its conceptual dimensions. The concept showcased a width of 1.8 meters, a height of 1.6 meters, and a wheelbase of 2.7 meters. An intriguing aspect is the anticipation of an aggressive pricing strategy, leveraging a high level of localization, including batteries and drivetrain setups.

Upon its launch in India, the Maruti eVX is poised to compete with formidable contenders such as the MG ZS EV, Mahindra XUV400, and upcoming EVs from Hyundai based on the Creta platform.
