The long-awaited 5-door Suzuki Jimny lifestyle SUV will make its global debut in January at the 2023 Auto Expo. Codenamed Suzuki YWD, the new Maruti Jimny 5-door has been fully revealed in a leaked picture on instagram. The production-spec model appears significantly larger than the original 3-door Jimny Sierra; however, it retains the original look.
The Maruti Jimny 5-door has been spotted testing in the hills of North India. The model is undergoing a final round of tests without any camouflage. The spy image confirms that the new model rides on a longer wheelbase and will have two more doors compared to the Sierra. Also visible is a bigger bodyshell and 3-door like spare wheel mounted on the tailgate. The spotted model is finished in the signature Kinetic Yellow paint scheme. It has chunky wheels and flared fenders with prominent black plastic cladding.
The leaked documents reveal that the Jimny 5-door will measure 3,850mm in length, 1645mm in width and 1730mm in height, and will ride on 2550mm longer wheelbase. Compared to the Sierra, the Jimny 5-door will have 300mm longer wheelbase and the overall length is increased by 300mm. The longer wheelbase and increase in size will help Suzuki engineers to create more space inside the cabin. The SUV will have a ground clearance of 210mm and is reportedly to have a kerb weight of 1,190kg that is 100kgs higher than the 3-door Sierra.
The Jimny LWB retains the boxy body style; however, it now has a newly designed door for the second-row passengers. There is a smaller rear glass area behind the large quarter glass for the rear door. The small glass area is surrounded by thick pillars at both corners. The rear profile looks exactly similar to the Sierra, featuring side opening door with exposed hinges, tailgate mounted spare tyre with black covering and same tail-lamp design & brake lights.
It is reported that the new Jimny 5-door could be called the new Maruti Gypsy in our market. The iconic Gypsy was discontinued in 2018 due to stricter emission norms and NCAP standards. It is expected to be powered by a 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine that powers the Ciaz sedan. This engine produces 102bhp and 130Nm of torque. The engine could be benefitted with Suzuki’s mild hybrid tech, which will improve its fuel efficiency and reduce emission levels. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic. The SUV will come with Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro 4WD system with a manual transfer case and low range.
Set to make global debut at Auto Expo 2023, the new Jimny is expected to be launched in our market in mid-2023. Trial production is likely to commence in next few weeks, while the series production will commence in 2023. Similar to the new Grand Vitara, the Jimny 5-door will be sold through NEXA premium dealership network.
