The extended wheelbase version of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny has been on test for a long time in India. Its final production model will have its world premiere at the 2023 Delhi Auto Expo in January and its market launch is reported to happen by August. According to a fresh media report, the company aims to produce around 5,000 – 6,000 units of the 5-door Maruti Jimny on monthly basis. It further states that the model could be introduced as the new Maruti Gypsy. The iconic Gypsy was discontinued in 2018 due to implementation of the stricter emission norms and NCAP standards. The Gypsy, which has massive brand recall value in India, was popular among hardcore off-road enthusiasts and seen as lifestyle vehicle. It was admired for its lightweight yet sturdy body built and off-road capabilities. Though, its engine was underpowered. The model was available with three-door layout and removable soft-top option. The new 5-door Maruti Jimny is likely to justify the Gypsy rebranding.
At the heart of the new Jimny will be a 1.5L K15B petrol engine, borrowed from the Ciaz sedan. The motor pushes out a peak power of 102bhp and 130Nm of torque. The carmaker might offer it with the mild hybrid technology, thus improving its fuel efficiency and reducing emission levels. For performing transmission duties, there will be a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic gearbox. The 5-door Jimny will be made available with the AllGrip Pro AWD system with a low-ratio gear. There will be 2H (two-wheel drive high) and 4H (four-wheel drive high) options.
The 5-door Maruti Jimny will measure 3850mm in length, 1645mm in width and 1730mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2550mm. While official details of the SUV will be revealed next month, it’s expected to come with features such as a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, steering mounted controls, etc.
