Maruti, Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra To Launch EVs in 2024

The Indian automobile industry witnessed significant growth in EV sales last year, with total volumes surpassing 1.5 million. The outlook for 2024 seems promising, as several new EVs have been planned across different price segments. India’s top four car manufacturers – Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, and Mahindra – are ready to expand their EV product portfolio this year with at least six new models. Let’s take a look at key details of the upcoming EVs.

Tata Curvv EV

Tata Curvv Launch Date

Tata Motors has confirmed that the Curvv concept-based electric SUV will arrive in its production-ready avatar in Q2 or Q3 2024. Its certainly one of the much-awaited EVs to launch this year. The model is currently in its testing phase and is likely to stay close to the concept. Spy images reveal that the Tata Curvv EV will retain vertically placed headlamps, a front LED strip, sculpted bonnet, sloping rear roofline, and squared-off wheel arches. However, it will get a new set of alloy wheels. Interior details are scanty at this point, but it’s likely to retain most elements from the concept. The SUV will have a new touchscreen infotainment system, a two-spoke steering wheel, and a digital driver’s display. Exact specifications are yet to be revealed, though the Curvv EV is likely to come with a dual-motor setup with an AWD system and offer a range of 400-500km.

Mahindra XUV300 EV

If reports are to be believed, Mahindra & Mahindra will bring in the updated XUV300 with an electric powertrain by June 2024. Once launched, it will be directly pitted against the Tata Nexon EV. Its design and styling could be inspired by the Mahindra BE electric SUVs, featuring newly-designed LED DRLs, headlamps, a front bumper, and a two-part grille with a larger central air intake. The electric SUV will also have a redesigned tailgate with a full-width LED light bar, new alloy wheels, and C-shaped taillamps. Most of its interior features will be similar to the new Mahindra XUV400 EV. The powertrain setup of the upcoming Mahindra XUV300 EV is likely to include a 35kWh battery pack with an electric motor. In terms of pricing and positioning, the XUV300 EV will sit below the XUV400 EV and is expected to cost nearly Rs 2 lakh less than its elder EV sibling.

Tata Harrier EV

The Tata Harrier EV concept was first previewed at last year’s Auto Expo, and recently, we have seen its leaked design patent. The leaked sketches reveal that the electric SUV will look different from its diesel counterpart. While the sheet metal will be retained, it will feature a new closed-off front grille with horizontal slats and vertical slats placed below it for battery cooling, triangular headlamps, and slim LED DRLs. Similar to the Harrier facelift, the Tata Harrier EV will come with a two-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo, touch-based HVAC controls, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree surround view camera, and ADAS tech. The Tata Harrier EV will be based on the brand’s new Acti.ev platform and is likely to come with a battery pack ranging between 60kWh – 80kWh. The EV is expected to deliver a range of around 500km. The market launch of the Harrier EV is scheduled for the second half of 2024, possibly before or around the Diwali season.

Maruti Suzuk eVX

Maruti Suzuki EVX Concept EV

The Maruti Suzuki EVX concept-based electric SUV will arrive during the 2024 festive season. It will be designed on Toyota’s 27PL skateboard platform, which will also be used for the brand’s upcoming future EVs. Measuring around 4.3 meters in length, the EV will ensure ample cabin space. Concerning design, the new Maruti EV will feature an upright nose flanked by large headlamps, a closed-off front grille, a flat bonnet, and C-pillar mounted rear door handles. Similar to the concept, the EVX will have a wide stance and muscular shoulder lines along with connected LED taillights at the back. Inside, the Maruti EVX is likely to have a dual-screen setup with vertically positioned AC vents, a floating center console with a rotary dial, and a new two-spoke steering wheel. Maruti Suzuki has already confirmed that its first EV will have ADAS tech, a frameless rearview mirror, and a 360-degree camera. Its powertrain setup will include a 60kWh battery pack delivering a range of around 500km. The entry-level variant is likely to come with a smaller battery pack (around 48kWh) and promise a range of 400km.

Mahindra XUV.e8

Mahindra XUV.e8

The production-ready Mahindra XUV.e8 SUV has already started taking shape ahead of its official debut in late 2024. It is essentially the electric version of the Mahindra XUV700 with some cosmetic changes. The front fascia of the electric SUV will be completely different from its ICE-powered counterpart, sporting a new sealed-off grille and triangular headlamp assembly placed in the front bumper. Spy images confirm that the Mahindra XUV.e8 electric SUV will have three horizontally oriented screens placed, one in the center for infotainment function, one behind the steering wheel working as a digital driver’s display, and one for the passenger showing multiple vehicle and other details. The SUV will also have a two-spoke, flat-bottomed steering wheel and a new touch-based climate control panel. The XUV.e8 will be the first Mahindra to underpin its born-electric INGLO skateboard platform. The carmaker has confirmed that the new electric SUV will have multiple battery options of up to 80kWh along with an AWD system.

The next in our list of the upcoming EVs in 2024 is the Hyundai Creta EV, which is currently in its initial testing phase, The model is likely to make its debut towards the end of 2024 and Its market launch happen in early 2025. The SUV’s electric version will be based on the updated Creta that recently went on sale in the country. Though it will carry some EV-specific design elements, such as a closed-off grille, newly designed alloy wheels, and a charging port at the front end. Reports suggest that the Creta EV will be made available with the 45kWh battery pack sourced from LG Chem. Its electric motor could be borrowed from the new-gen, entry-level Kona EV (global-spec). The latter one has a single motor fitted on the front axle delivering a claimed power of 138bhp and 255Nm of torque. Here, the new Hyundai Creta EV will go up against the upcoming Maruti eVX and MG ZS EV.
