The hatchback segment has always been a strong sales contributor in the Indian automobile industry. Though, the SUVs (especially the sub-4 metre SUVs) have overtaken the hatchbacks in the current fiscal year. In order to recapture the top position, India’s top 3 hatchbacks are ready to enter into their new generation in the next couple of years. Here’re key details of the upcoming next-generation Swift, Alto and Tiago.
New-Gen Maruti Alto
The new-generation Maruti Alto, which is currently in its testing phase, is reported to hit roads near around 2022 Diwali season. One of the major updates will come in the form of the modular Heartect platform that underpins Maruti Suzuki’s new breed cars. Compared to the current model, the new one will be wider and taller and sit on a longer wheelbase. The hatchback will come with the entirely revised front fascia and a few more noticeable changes. The 2022 Maruti Alto is expected to be offered with features such as a touchscreen infotainment system, semi-digital instrument cluster, keyless entry, power steering and more. Under the hood, it might feature the 796cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine with manual and AMT gearbox options. The automaker could offer the Celerio’s K10C Dualjet petrol engine as well.
New-Gen Maruti Swift
The Swift hatchback, which is in its third generation in the Japanese market, will enter into its new generation this year. While the hatchback’s all-new model will debut towards the end of 2022, its market launch is likely to happen sometime next year. Its India launch timeline is yet to be revealed. Reports suggest that the all-new Swift will underpin the Heartect platform and witness comprehensive design changes. Here, it will continue to come with the 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol and 1.2L petrol with mild hybrid tech options. Both motors could be calibrated to offer better performance and fuel efficiency.
New-Gen Tata Tiago
First launched in 2016, the Tata Tiago received its first mid-life update in 2020. While the model is relatively fresh and updated, its expected to enter into its next generation in the next 2-3 years. As of now, details of the all-new Tata Tiago are scanty. Though, it’s reported to switch from the ‘X0’ platform to the brand’s new Alfa architecture borrowed from the Altroz premium hatchback. A few noticeable changes are expected to be made inside and out. Though, the engine setup might be carried forward from the existing model.
