Hyundai India recently rolled out its first electric vehicle – Kona – at an introductory price of Rs 25.30 lakh (ex-showroom). The carmaker aims to sell 500 units of the electric SUV on annual basis. According to a media report, the company is also planning to launch the Hyundai Nexo Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) sometime in 2021.

The hydrogen-powered SUV was first showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2018, and made its India debut at the India-Korean Business Summit last year. Hyundai Nexo will be India’s first hydrogen-powered vehicle. The company will partner to develop the required infrastructure for the Nexo in Delhi and NCR region.

Globally, the Hyundai Nexo is made available with a 120kW motor generating power worth 163PS (161bhp) and 395Nm of torque. While the global model delivers a range of 800km, the India-spec version will be able to cover 1,000km. It can accelerate 0 to 100kmph in 9.2 seconds. Compared to the electric motor, the fuel cell unit is lighter and considered as one of the most eco-friendly or greener powertrains in the world.

With an aim to encourage green mobility solutions, the Indian government has reduced the GST rate on hydrogen-powered vehicles from 28% to 12%. Hyundai aims to introduce 18 eco-friendly models globally by 2025 and Nexo will be among them.
