5 Upcoming SUVs With Both Petrol & EV Powertrains

Electric Cars and SUVs are gaining huge traction among car buyers in the country. The Tata Tiago EV is currently the most affordable electric vehicle, which is priced under Rs 10 lakh. Moreover, MG Motor India will soon introduce a new 2-door Comet EV which will cost around Rs 10 lakh. A new range of electric vehicles will be launched in our market in the next couple of years. In this article, we bring you top 5 upcoming SUVs that will be offered with both ICE as well as electric powertrains – 

Tata Curvv

Tata Curvv Petrol

Tata Motors will launch the production version of the Curvv SUV Coupe concept in the country in 2024. The new model will be based on the new GEN 2 hybrid platform, which will support both ICE and electric powertrains. The ICE version will rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, MG Astor, VW Taigun & the Skoda Kushaq. It is likely to get a larger battery pack with an estimated range close to 500kms. The EV will rival the MG ZS EV, Hyundai Kona EV and the Mahindra XUV400. The SUV Coupe will also receive a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that produces 125bhp and 225Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic versions will be on offer.

Tata Motors had showcased the 4-door version of the Sierra concept at the 2023 Auto Expo. The company has confirmed that the production version of the electric SUV will be launched in 2025. In fact, the production model will retain most of the design and will look identical to the original concept. It will be offered with two seating layouts – 5 seater & 4-seater lounge version. 

The Sierra will be designed & developed on the Gen 2 platform or SIGMA architecture, which is a hybrid architecture. The electric version is likely to get a 60-80kWh battery pack with a front-axle mounted electric motor as standard. The lifestyle EV could also get an AWD setup with two electric motors mounted on front and rear axles. The ICE version will get the 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine that produces 170bhp and 280Nm of torque. 

Tata Harrier & Safari

Tata Motors is preparing to give a major makeover to its popular midsized SUVs, the Harrier & the Safari. Both SUVs have been spotted testing multiple times on the Indian roads. Tata had showcased the Harrier EV concept at the 2023 Auto Expo. The company has confirmed that the Harrier EV will be launched in the country in 2024. Similarly, the Safari SUV will also have an electrified version in 2024-25. The new SUVs will be based on the Land Rover-derived OMEGA Arc platform, which will be combined with Tata’s GEN 2 EV architecture. The platform is heavily re-engineered to adopt electrification.

Both SUVs will come with a dual-motor all-wheel drive set-up as well as the front-wheel-drive layout. The new models feature a battery pack of around 60kWh to 80kWh and likely to offer a range of over 500km. The new models will come with vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging capacities. The ICE versions will be offered with two engine options – a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel and a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol. 

Hyundai Creta

Hyundai has confirmed that the new Creta with India-specific changes will be launched in 2024. The new model will receive significant design changes and an upgraded cabin along with ADAS functionalities. It will be offered with 3 engine options – a 1.5L NA petrol, a 1.5L turbo petrol and a 1.5L turbo diesel. Hyundai has already started testing the electric version of the Creta SUV. The EV version is reportedly to be launched in our market in 2025. 

Kia Seltos

2023 Kia Seltos Facelift

Similar to the Creta, Kia India will also launch the new Seltos SUV with ICE and electric powertrains in our market. The ICE version is expected to be launched before the end of this year or early next year, while the electric model will arrive in 2025. The new Seltos will share the engine options with the Creta SUV.
