Tata Sierra To Get Petrol, Electric Powertrains – Scorpio-N Rival

The all-new Tata Sierra SUV recently made its public appearance in its near production avatar at the Auto Expo 2023. Its final version will hit roads sometime in 2025. In Tata’s product portfolio, the Sierra will sit above the Safari SUV and compete against the Mahindra Scorpio-N. In order to target a wider market, the company will introduce it with two powertrain options – petrol and electric. Though, Tata hasn’t yet revealed its specifications.

The Sierra electric is expected to have a battery pack with capacity higher than the Tata Nexon EV Max. The latter one comes with a 40.5kWh battery pack offering an ARAI-claimed range of 437km on a single charge. It also has an electric motor. The setup delivers a peak power of 143bhp and 250Nm of torque. The new Tata Sierra petrol version might use one of the company’s new turbocharged gasoline motors that were revealed at the Auto Expo 2023.

Just so you know, the home-grown automaker unveiled a 1.2L, 3-cylinder and a 1.5L, 4-cylinder petrol units delivering a claimed power of 125PS with 225Nm and 170PS with 280Nm respectively. While the former could also be used in the Nexon subcompact SUV, the latter might power the Harrier and Safari petrol versions.

In terms of design and styling, the Tata Sierra petrol will be slightly different from its electric iteration. The production-ready version is likely to stay true to the recently showcased model. The Sierra EV features a new faux grille, sporty front bumper, sleek headlamps connected with a chrome strip, dual-tone wheels, blacked-out C and D pillars and a large glasshouse. It carries upright stance with a flatter bonnet.

Tata Motors has also planned to foray into the highly-competitive mid-size SUV segment to challenge the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Grand Vitara and Kia Seltos. The model will be based on the Curvv concept that made its India debut at the 16th edition of the Delhi Auto Expo.
