Tata Safari Electric Testing Begins; To Share Features With Harrier EV

Tata Motors is planning to expand its Indian product portfolio with a range of new models including SUVs and EVs. The carmaker will also give generation change and mid-life updates to its existing models. Meanwhile, the company is gearing up to launch the updated versions of the Harrier and Safari SUVs. While their official launch date is yet to be announced, the models are likely to go on sale in coming months. What is more interesting is that the automaker has begun testing the Tata Safari electric SUV that’s recently caught on camera with heavy camouflage.

The spotted test mule of the Tata Safari EV seems to share some of its design elements with the Tata Harrier EV that made its debut at the 2023 Auto Expo. The latter is based on Tata’s Gen 2 (Sigma) architecture that’s essentially the heavily re-engineered version of the OmegaArch platform. Major modifications have been made to its fuel tank area and flat floor, thus making it lighter and more energy efficient than the existing Omega platform.

Tata had revealed that the Harrier EV will come with AWD system along with the vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging capacities. It’s expected to feature a battery capacity of around 60kWh and deliver a range of around 400-500km (in real world conditions). The electric SUV concept carries a new blanked-off grille, tweaked front bumper, blackened housing around headlamp clusters, revised central air intake with a blanked-off panel and new angular creases.

Some of its other key highlights were ‘EV’ badges on the fenders and flush door handles, revised taillamp assembly with a new LED light bar running the width of the tailgate. The Tata Safari electric SUV is likely to share all aforementioned features with the Harrier EV.

Tata confirmed that the production-ready electric Harrier will witness a market launch sometime next year. The Safari EV is likely to come with its younger EV sibling.
