The electric mobility segment has been growing at a fast pace in India, thanks to the increasing fuel prices and attractive incentives offered by the government. Several automakers including Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and MG have planned to foray into the electric passenger vehicle segment in coming years. Currently, the Tata Nexon EV is the top-selling electric car in the country. In order to challenge its dominance, Mahindra & Mahindra and MG Motor India will bring in new electric subcompact SUVs in the next couple of years. Here’s the expected launch timeline and details of the upcoming Tata Nexon electric SUV rivals.
Mahindra e-XUV300
The electric iteration of the Mahindra XUV300, which was first previewed at the 2020 Auto Expo, is expected to hit roads sometime next year. It will be the first Mahindra to underpin the MESMA 350 (Mahindra Electric Scalable and Modular Architecture). If reports are to be believed, the Mahindra e-XUV300 will offer a range of 375km on a full charge that’s significantly higher than the Tata Nexon EV. The subcompact electric SUV will feature an in-house developed 350V powertrain with dual electric motor setup and batteries up to 80kWh capacity.
MG Compact EV
The British automaker confirmed a compact electric SUV for India that will be priced below Rs 10 lakh. It’s expected to see a release towards the end of 2022 or early 2023. Details of the upcoming new MG compact electric SUV are still under the wraps. In other updates, the company is also working on a electric car that will cost under Rs 20 lakh and placed above the small EV in the company’s product lineup. In coming months, MG Motor India will launch the ZS petrol that’s likely to be named – MG Astor. It will be positioned against the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and the newly-launched Skoda Kushaq.
