Upcoming MG Electric SUV (Nexon EV Rival) – What We Know So Far

We have reported earlier that MG Motor India is planning to expand its product portfolio with a range of new vehicles in coming years. The lineup will include the MG ZS petrol, a sub-4 meter SUV, G10 MPV, 360M MPV and a small electric SUV. Rajeev Chaba, President and Managing Director, MG Motor India, has already confirmed that the new MG compact electric SUV will arrive by the end of 2022. It will be priced under Rs 20 lakh and take head-to-head against the Tata Nexon EV and the Mahindra eXUV300 that’s due for late 2021.

The British carmaker plans to setup its own battery facility assembly plant before the end of 2021 and aims to begin operations in 2022. The company will make an investment of over Rs 4,000 crore to establish the battery assembling facility. Currently, MG is testing an electric car with a range of 500km across different terrain and climatic conditions. While the carmaker hasn’t yet revealed the product details, it’s likely to be the updated version of the MG ZS EV.

Reports suggest that MG Motor India is also planning “a cost-efficient EV” that will be priced below Rs 10 lakh. As of now, there is no information on the upcoming affordable MG electric car. SAIC’s global product lineup has multiple electric vehicles including Baojun E100, Baojun E200 and Baojun E300. More details on the upcoming affordable MG electric car are likely to be revealed in near future.

Meanwhile, the company is gearing up to launch the MG ZS petrol to challenge the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. Globally, the SUV is offered with two engines – 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol (118bhp/150Nm) and 1.3L turbo petrol (160bhp/230Nm). While the former comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox, the latter can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic transmission.
