Maruti XA Alpha and Ertiga to get new 1.5-litre diesel engine

Maruti XA Alpha

Volkswagen India has recently introduced the new Vento and Polo hatchback with new 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine. This engine replaces the bigger 1.6-litre engine. The same engine also powers the Skoda Rapid, and it is basically a downsized version of the 1.6-litre TDI motor. Italian automaker, Fiat is also contemplating a 1.5L engine, which is a downsized version of the 1.6-litre multi-jet motor. This engine would power the next generation Linea and the X3U compact SUV.

Interestingly, India’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki is all set to join this league and is aiming to launch the 1.5-litre diesel engine in the country. This engine would power the next generation Ertiga MPV, Ciaz sedan and the upcoming XA Alpha based compact SUV. The smaller displacement engine would allow Suzuki to take full benefit on smaller diesel engines. In India, cars that measures less than 4 metre and powered by 1.2-litre petrol and the 1.5-litre diesel motor could avail excise duty benefits.

The excise norms have force car manufacturers to develop India-specific cars, which could be the reason behind increase in sub-4 metre sedans and SUVs in the country. Maruti Suzuki India is also working on a new 792cc, twin cylinder turbo diesel engine that will power the Celerio and Wagon R. The Celerio diesel is expected to go on sale by early next year, while the XA Alpha based compact SUV launch likely in 2016.
