Upcoming Hyundai Small Electric SUV To Challenge Tata Nexon EV

Hyundai aims to expand its electric vehicle (EV) product portfolio in India in the next 3-4 years. The automaker currently has a single EV offering – Kona that’s ready to receive its first mid-life update in 2022. Similar to the existing model, the new one will come via CKD (Completely Knocked Down) route. The South Korean carmaker will bring in Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric sedan and a mass-market EV sometime in 2022 and 2024 respectively. Hyundai’s mass-market EV will be a made-in-India, entry-level SUV packed with the small capacity battery packs.

If reports are to be believed, the new Hyundai small EV will deliver a real-world range of around 200km – 220km. It will be placed against India’s top-selling EV – Tata Nexon EV. Recently, the Nexon EV achieved 10,000 sales milestone in the country. Measuring below 4 meters, the new Hyundai small EV could be an electric iteration of the Venue featuring BorgWarner integrated drive module (iDM). The iDM is a modular unit with an electric motor, a gearbox and power electronics.

Besides the EVs, the South Korean automaker is ready to launch the updated Hyundai Creta and a brand-new compact MPV in early 2022. Speculations are on rife that the upcoming Hyundai MPV could be named Hyundai Stargazer and it will be positioned against the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Mahindra Marazzo and the upcoming Kia compact MPV (Kia KY). It could be packed with the ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) along with the adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, lane changing assist and more.

Talking about the 2022 Hyundai Creta, the SUV will receive noticeable changes inside and out. Its engine setup, however, is likely to remain unchanged. The SUV is reported to be equipped with the Level 2 ADAS and a 360 degree camera. Its front design will be inspired by the new-generation Hyundai Tucson that was recently spotted testing in the country.
