Hyundai To Launch A Mass-Market Compact EV In India

Korean automaker, Hyundai is reportedly working on a new mass market electric vehicle for the Indian market. Not just Hyundai, several automakers including Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and others are also readying their respective mass market electric cars. The new Hyundai electric vehicle will be positioned below the Kona electric in our market. The new EV is expected to be launched in our market in the next 3 years.

Hyundai’s upcoming mass market electric vehicle will be sit under 4 meters in length. It is likely to be an electric derivative of the Hyundai Venue compact SUV, which could be a strong rival to the likes of the Tata Nexon EV and the upcoming Mahindra eXUV300. In fact, MG Motors has also announced to launch an electric SUV below the MG ZS EV in India.

BS6 Hyundai Venue

Hyundai is reportedly working on a setting up specialised distribution system for Electric Vehicles. If reports are to be believed, the upcoming Hyundai Casper micro SUV could receive an electric powertrain. Codenamed AX1, the new compact EV is reportedly to be introduced in Korea in 2023. The same model could also be launched in our market as an entry-level electric vehicle.

The Hyundai AX1 electric will rival the electric version of the Tata HBX based electric car. The Hyundai A-SUV has been caught testing multiple times in South Korea. The spy images reveal the design of the mini SUV is heavily inspired by the Venue compact SUV. In fact, the AX1 looks like a baby Venue. The new Hyundai AX1 electric will use BorgWarner integrated drive module (iDM), which comprises of an electric motor, a gearbox and power electronics in a modular unit. Hyundai has reportedly opted for the ‘iDM146’ unit, which operates at 400 volts and has a peak power of 135kW or 184PS.

Hyundai Casper

Hyundai has inaugurated a new corporate headquarters in Gurugram. The company has also set up 14 EV charging units at its newly inaugurated headquarters. This includes 3 DC fast chargers and 11 AC normal chargers. At the inaugural event, Hyundai has also showcased the Genesis GV80, Nexo FCEV and the Ionic 5.
