Upcoming Electric Cars In 2022 – Key Details

The global car manufacturers are working on new and sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels from past several years. In fact, the automakers in India have started investing in EV (electric vehicle) space including Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, MG, Tata and Mahindra. Several electric cars are ready to hit Indian roads in coming years. Here’s a brief on the upcoming electric cars, which are slated to arrive in 2022.

Mahindra eKUV100 could be the most affordable electric car in the country. While its official launch date is yet to be announced, the model is reported to see a release in early 2022. Its powertrain system will include a 15.9kWh battery pack transmitting power to an electric motor producing power worth 54.4bhp and 120Nm of torque. The battery can be charged by using both regular power socket and fast charger. A few cosmetic changes will be made to the eKUV100 including the Blue accents here and there.

Previewed at the 2020 Auto Expo, the Tata Altroz EV could be the next big launch from the home-grown automaker in the country. The electric hatchback will use the Nexon EV’s powertrain that includes an IP67 certified 30.2kWh battery pack and a permanent magnet AC motor. It’s expected to deliver a range of around 250km-300km. Its battery pack can be juiced up in 60 minutes via DC fast charger (up to 80%) and 8 hours via standard power socket (100%). Similar to the Nexon EV, the Altroz EV could be offered with the new ZConnect app.

India’s top-selling electric car – Tata Nexon EV is likely to receive an update sometime next year. It will surely be one of the much-anticipated upcoming electric cars in the country. If reports are to be believed, the automaker is planning to introduce a more powerful version of the electric subcompact SUV. The updated Nexon EV is likely to offer power around 134bhp that will be close to Hyundai Kona (136bhp). At present, the model comes with the Ziptron EV high voltage powertrain that consists of a 26kWh lithium-ion battery and a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor.

2021 Hyundai Kona EV

The Hyundai Kona facelift, which was unveiled in late 2020, will hit showrooms sometime next year. The electric SUV receives noticeable changes inside and out along with a few mechanical updates. The model lineup will come in two variants – standard and long-range – featuring 39.2kWh battery with 136PS electric motor and 64kWh battery with 204PS electric motor respectively. While the former will deliver a range of up to 305kms, the latter will offer 484kms. Some of key features will include a bigger 10.25-inch digital instrument console, an optional 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Hyundai BlueLink connected car solutions, new ambient light technology and more.
