Top 4 New Sub-Compact SUV Launches In 2021

Car manufacturers are betting big on compact SUVs (Sport Utility Vehicles) as the segment saw tremendous demand in the previous fiscal year. At present, we have around 7 subcompact SUV models in the country including the newly-launched Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. In 2021, the competition will get fiercer with the launch of some more sub-4 metre SUVs. Here’s a brief on the upcoming new compact SUVs that are slated to hit roads in 2021.

1. Renault Kiger

Renault is ready to mark its entry into the subcompact SUV space with the all-new Kiger that was recently unveiled in its concept form. The carmaker says that its production model will share 80% resemblance with the concept and see a release in the first half of 2021. Engine setup of the Renault Kiger will include the 1.0L naturally aspirated and 1.0L turbocharged petrol motors making power worth 72bhp with 96Nm and 99bhp with 160Nm. There will be two gearboxes on offer – a 5-speed manual and a CVT automatic.

2. Tata Hornbill

Tata Motors has already confirmed that it will bring in the production-ready version of the HBX concept in early 2021. If reports are to be believed, it might be named Tata Hornbill. Similar to the concept, the final model will carry the upright stance along with Tata’s Impact 2.0 design language. Based on the Alfa platform, the Tata Hornbill is likely to be offered with a 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol and a 1.2L turbocharged petrol engine. Both manual and AMT gearboxes will be on offer.

3. Citroen C21

Citroen C21 Compact SUV

Citroen C21 (codename) will be the second offered from the French carmaker in the Indian market. The model is expected to launch in the second half of 2021. It will be based on the Groupe PSA CMP (EMP1) platform that’s compatible to different body styles and powertrains. In India, the Citroen C21 is reported to be offered with a 1.2L turbocharged petrol engine making power close to 130bhp. The carmaker might also offer a 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol and 1.5L diesel engines. Transmission choices will include manual and automatic units.

4. MG Compact SUV

MG Motor India is planning to expand its product portfolio with two new models – a compact MPV and a subcompact. The new MG subcompact SUV is expected to be priced under Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). It might be launched in the second quarter of 2021. The compact SUV will be positioned below the MG Hector in the company’s product lineup. It might be offered with both petrol and diesel engine options.
