Tata’s Electric Future Plan – Improved Battery Packs, Motors, New Platform

Tata Motors has planned a range of new EVs with multiple range options across different segments. In the next 4-5 years, there will be 10 new Tata electric cars including Altroz EV, Punch EV, Sierra EV, Curvv and Avinya concept based EVs. Speaking to a media publication, Shailesh Chandra, Tata Motors President Passenger Vehicle and Electric Vehicles, has revealed that the company aims to strengthen its R&D to scale up capabilities across different business verticals with new hiring in this fiscal year.

As pre the new business plans, Tata will hire resources for fields like product development, advanced engineering, supply chain, operations and commercial functions at different levels. In the EV segment, the home-grown automaker will improve its expertise in the area of battery packs, motor design and new platforms along with other critical functionalities.

Tata Avinya EV

The home-grown automaker will use three different platforms – a converted IC engine platform, new Sigma architecture and a skateboard for its future EVs. The Curvv concept underpins Tata’s Gen 2 platform (i.e. Sigma), while the Avinya is based on a skateboard pure EV architecture. The latter one is claimed to enable Tata’s designer to use “best weight and space efficiency”. Its long wheelbase allows to fit large battery pack under the floorpan.

The next electric launch from Tata Motors will be the Altroz EV that’s reported to arrive before the end of 2022. While its powertrain details are still under the wraps, the e-hatchback is likely to come with the brand’s updated Ziptron electric technology sourced from the Nexon EV Max. However, its battery capacity and power output could be different. Its design and styling will also be different from its ICE counterpart. The Tata Altroz EV will have a closed-off grille, differently designed bumpers, air dams with star pattern, new set of alloy wheels and blacked-out section of the tailgate.
