Tata To Launch Multiple EVs; Based On 3 Different Platforms

Tata Motors has some aggressive plans for the Indian market. The company is looking to launch a range of new products especially in the SUV and EV segments. While it’s ready to roll out the long-range Nexon EV and Tigor EV in coming weeks, the Altroz EV hatchback is likely to arrive towards the end of this year, Recently, the carmaker unveiled the Curvv EV mid-size SUV coupe and Avinya electric SUV concepts based on the Gen 2 and Gen 3 platforms respectively.

Talking about Tata’s upcoming electric cars, the company will adopt three platform strategy including IC to EV conversion, Gen 2 (Sigma platform) and Gen 3 (Born Electric skateboard architecture). The first phase includes the Nexon EV and Tigor EV that use the platform underpinning their ICE siblings with a battery pack and an electric motor. These models deliver range of around 250km.

The Gen 2 platform based models will be based on the adapted architecture. That means, the company will take the IC engine models and make them more suitable for electrification. The upcoming Tata Altroz EV and Punch EV will be designed on the same strategy. Both models underpin Alfa platform, which will be heavily modified for electrification. The upcoming Tata Sierra will also come under this category.

The third phase will include Gen 3 architecture based models offering range around 500km and come with Tesla-like autonomous features. This skateboard is developed grounds-up for pure electric vehicles. The production version of the recently unveiled Tata Avinya electric SUV concept will be the first model to be built on the Gen 3 architecture.

Tata Group’s Chairman, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, said that the company ended this fiscal year at 8 percent penetration and it’s believed to reach in the double-digit by the end of this financial year. Tata aims to hold 30% EV market by 2030.
