Tata Sumo Says Goodbye To India – Report

Tata Sumo Discontinued

Tata Sumo, the 10-seater rear-wheel-drive SUV from the home-grown carmaker, had begun its journey in India way back in 1994. Initially, the car was a runaway success for the company and registered over 10 lakh sales within first 4 years of its arrival. The Sumo was especially designed for the military and off-road purposes.

Now, the Tata Sumo has reached the end of its life cycle and has been discontinued in the country. The SUV bid a farewell for two reasons – firstly it doesn’t meet the new AIS 145 safety norms and BNVSAP (Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program) and secondly it isn’t BS6-compliant. The Sumo was powered by a BS4-compliant 3.0L CR4, 4-cylinder diesel engine that’s good for 85PS and 250Nm.

Based on the Tata X2 body-on-frame platform, the Tata Sumo witnessed three updates in its life cycle including Sumo Spacio (in 2000), Sumo Victa (2004) and Sumo Gold (in 2011). The Sumo Gold was the last updated version of the SUV that received new AC controls, fabrics and instrumentation along with faux briar finish.

The Tata Sumo Gold also received minor mechanically changes including new shock absorbers making its frame less rigid and improved braking system. In 2013, the SUV got the last update with features such as dual zone AC, new radio CD and MP3, new paint scheme and body stickers. The production of Tata Sumo was ceased in April, 2019.
