As per FADA (Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations), the retail sales of EVs witnessed over three-fold growth in the last fiscal year. A total of 4,29,217 electric vehicles were sold in the country in FY2021-22 as opposed to 1,34,821 units in FY2020-21. In the electric passenger vehicle space, a total of 17,802 units were retailed and the segment was led by Tata motors with sales of 15,198 units. The home-grown automaker has a market share of 85.37 percent in the EV space.
MG Motor India grabbed the second spot with total sales of 2,045 units and has a market share of 11.49 per cent. In order to further strengthen their EV business, Tata Motors and MG Motor India will bring in mass market electric vehicles that will be priced below Rs 8 lakh. Upcoming Tata Electric Car
Tata Motors has been working on multiple electric cars, which are slated to hit roads in the next 4-5 years. At present, the Tata Tigor EV is the cheapest electric car from the home-grown automaker that costs from Rs 11.99 lakh. According to a fresh media report, Tata’s new mass-market EV has been codenamed “Challenger Series”. It could be the electric version of the Tata Tiago hatchback or Tata Punch mini SUV. The Punch is designed on the Alfa modular platform that’s compatible to electric powertrain. The new Tata affordable EV is likely to arrive in 2024.
Upcoming MG Electric Car
The British automaker is reported to launch two electric cars in India including a compact SUV and hatchback. Both models will be based on the Baojun E200 platform and are reported to witness a release after 2024. The upcoming MG electric cars will feature smaller battery pack and offer lower range than the MG ZS EV. These will be developed to fulfil market specific requirements. The new MG electric hatchback is reported to unveil in its production avatar by the end of 2022 and its launch might happen in 2023.
