Update May 20, 2015: Renault’s all new small car is called the Kwid, and will be launched during the festive season. Details Here
The small hatch will take on the likes of Maruti Suzuki Alto 800/K10, Hyundai Eon and others in the league. Now that the unveiling is just few days ahead, the company has started the pre-launch promotion of the car. The promotion has begun with a video that talks about “an all new Renault unveiling on 20th May”. The video, however, doesn’t reveal the clear pictures of the car.
After receiving an excellent response for the Duster SUV, the company launched the Lodgy MPV. Now, the company is all set to enter into the budget segment, which is highly competitive. The French automaker is working on an all-new compact hatchback, codenamed XBA, which has been spotted testing several times during its test rounds on Indian roads. The small car will make its global debut in India on May 20, 2015.
To be called Renault Kayou in India, the small car is based on the CMF-A platform that will also underpin the Datsun Redi-Go based hatchback. It will be the company’s first car based on the CMF architecture, which will be manufactured at Renault-Nissan technical centre at Chennai.
The Renault Kayou (XBA) will be a tall hatchback, which will share components with other Renaults to keep cost down. Going by the spy shots available on web, the small car gets a single slat chrome grille that accommodates large logo, flanked by sleek, sweptback headlamps. The bonnet is likely to get flowing lines, while the lower bumper has blackened air-dam complemented by fog lamps. The side profile of the car is expected to get aggressive creases, while the wheel arches will get alloy wheels or steel wheels.
The interior pictures of the Kayou hatchback is yet to be revealed, but we believe that the car will share components with other Renault’s. It is likely to get dual-tone dashboard, multi-spoke steering wheel, 2-DIN audio system with Bluetooth, USB and AUX-in, air conditioning, etc.
Engine & Transmission
The compact hatch will be powered by an 800cc, three-cylinder petrol engine, which has been developed at the Nissan-Renault Alliance unit in Chennai. This engine is expected to churn out 50bhp of power and about 90Nm of torque. Both five-speed manual and automated manual transmission options will be on offer.
Renault Kayou Mileage (Expected)– The XBA budget car is expected to return around 18kmpl and 22kmpl of mileage in city and on highways, respectively.
Renault Kayou Price in India (Expected)– Rs. 3 lakh
