Next-gen Ford EcoSport Rumoured To Rival Creta; Tested On Ka Sedan Body

First introduced in 2012, the current generation Ford EcoSport received a major makeover in 2017. Since then, Ford introduced multiple small changes and new special/limited editions to boost the sales of the EcoSport. The SUV is already 8 years old and needed a new generation model to remain relevant in the highly competitive compact SUV segment. The company has already started working on the next-gen Ford EcoSport, which hasalready entered into testing phase.

According to the Brazilian media, a camouflaged Ford Ka sedan (Aspire in India) is the start of component testing for the next-gen Ford EcoSport. This prototype was caught testing in Tatui (SP), where the Ford Proving Ground is located. It is visible that the spotted model has larger wheels and SUV-like tyres and raised suspension set-up. It is common practice that automakers used different body shells for testing components, which will be added in prototypes later in development. In fact, Citroen was using the Peugeot 208 body shell to test the CMP platform and the components for the upcoming compact SUV in India. Also See – Next-gen Ford EcoSport imagined as baby Bronco

The report suggests that the next-gen Ford EcoSport will be based on the updated version of the existing B platform. The global model is reportedly to grow in size and will measure close to 4.3 meters in length (Current EcoSport is 4,096mm in global markets). This will make it a direct rival to the likes of the Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Creta and others in the category. The SUV will have longer wheelbase, which should help in creating more space inside the cabin.

In India, the next EcoSport will be developed in collaboration with Mahindra. The company is also working on an all-new sub-4 meter SUV, which will be placed under the EcoSport in global markets. It is quite early to comment whether Ford will make the bigger EcoSport to rival the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos in India. Mahindra will also use the Ford’s B platform to develop an all-new mid-sized SUV, which is rumoured to be called the XUV400.
