New Tata Safari (Codenamed Gravitas) Launch By January 2021 End

Tata Motors has announced it will bring back the iconic brand ‘Safari’ with the production-ready version of the Tata Gravitas that was previewed at the 2020 Auto Expo. Official bookings of the new Tata Safari will be commenced in coming weeks, followed by its launch in January 2021. It will be the most expensive SUV from the home-grown carmaker in the country. The carmaker says that the Tata Safari that represented “prestige and performance” for over two decades will come in an all-new avatar and will carry forward its “strong legacy”.

The new Tata Safari is claimed to a much evolved product in terms of design, interiors, technology and performance. It will be based on the brand’s Impact 2.0 design philosophy and underpins the OMEGARC platform that’s derived from the Land Rover’s D8 platform. The new Tata SUV is likely to be offered with both 6 and 7-seats configuration. Once launched, it will take head-to-head against the MG Hector and the new-generation Mahindra XUV500 that’s due for April 2021.

The 2021 Tata Safari (Tata Gravitas) will measure 4661mm in length, 1894mm in width and 1886mm in height with a wheelbase of 2741mm. This makes it around 63mm longer and 80mm taller than the Tata Harrier. Most of its design bits and features are likely to be carried over from the 5-seater Harrier. In fact, the engine setup might also be shared with the Tata Harrier. The 2021 Tata Safari is likely to source power form a 2.0L turbocharged diesel motor that’s good for 170bhp. It can be had with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque convertor automatic transmission. With additional third row and heavier body-built than the Harrier, the 2021 Tata Safari (Tata Gravitas) might be slightly less fuel efficient than its 5-seater sibling.
