Mahindra & Mahindra today announced that the second-generation Thar has breached 50,000 booking mark within 6 months of its arrival in the market. The SUV has been favoured for its rugged styling, upmarket interior, powerful engines and better off-road capabilities. Commenting on the booking milestone, Veejay Nakra, Chief Executive Officer, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. said, that the new Mahindra Thar has surpassed all expectations of the company.
Due to high demand, the off-road SUV is currently observing a waiting period of around 11 months. In order to reduce its waiting period, the company is working with its suppliers to increase its production at its Nasik plant in Maharashtra. The carmaker says that the new-generation Thar commemorates the brand’s 7 decades 4X4 legacy.
The new Mahindra Thar was introduced in two trims – AX and LX – priced between Rs 9.80 lakh – Rs 13.75 lakh. Later, the carmaker removed AX Std, AX, AX (O) and LX variants from the model lineup and increased its prices. At present, the compact off-roader is available in the price range of Rs 12.10 lakh – Rs 14.15 lakh (all, ex-showroom). It can be had with either a 152bhp, 2.0L turbo petrol or a 12bhp, 2.2L turbo diesel engine. Both motors are available with the 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox options. All variants get a 4X4 system with a manual-shift transfer case with a low ratio.
If reports are to be believed, the new Thar will receive a new removable hard-top variant featuring a two-piece roof with three segments and newly-designed rear screen mounts. The model lineup might also get a new 180 mStallion Pro turbo petrol engine that will deliver a top speed of around 180kmph. There might also be three new colour schemes, namely, Olive, Silver and White. The new-generation Thar received 4 star safety rating in the latest round of Global NCAP.
