It is no secret that Suzuki is working on the new gen Alto entry-level hatch, which will be launched in Japan in the next few months. The Japanese-spec model will be completely different from the India-spec model. Ahead of the official reveal, brochure details of the new-gen Suzuki Alto has been leaked on the Internet.
Previous reports claim that the new-gen Suzuki Alto will be unveiled in January 2022; however, Suzuki is yet to make an official announcement on the same. The 9th generation Alto is based on the improved version of the lightweight HEARTECT platform, which also underpins the India-spec Suzuki S-Presso and the new WagonR.
The leaked picture reveals that the new-gen Suzuki Alto looks better than the previous model; however, it retains the boxy-shape and the tall stance. The small car gets smaller front grille with a chrome bar placed between the two big headlamps. The hatchback is finised in dual-tone colour options with white roof. It gets 7-spoke wheels, big window glasses for airy feel and wrap-around tail-lights.
The new-gen Suzuki Alto for the Japanese market comes with all-new interior. It is better equipped than the previous model. The central console has a small infotainment system, vertically-stacked air con vents, new AC buttons, etc. It also gets a multi-functional steering wheel with controls for audio and Bluetooth telephony.
The standard variant is reportedly to be powered by a newly developed in-line 3-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine, which is expected to offer better performance. It is confirmed that the new model will get a mild hybrid system. This SHVS mild hybrid system will further improve the overall fuel efficiency of the Alto. It is expected to be one of the most fuel efficient cars in its category.
New Alto In India
Maruti Suzuki has also started testing the new-gen Alto hatchback in India. The India-spec model will be entirely different from the Japanese-spec model. It will be significantly bigger and more spacious. The spy images suggest that the new Alto will be longer, wider and taller than the existing model, which should help MSIL to create more space inside the cabin.
The new model will be designed and developed on Suzuki’s new lightweight HEARTECT platform that also underpins the new WagonR, S-Presso and the upcoming Celerio. The new model will be lighter than the current car, which should improve its efficiency. It is likely to be offered with the existing 800cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine. The company could also add the 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine, which was earlier offered on the Alto K10. The small car will also receive CNG powered model.
