Maruti-Toyota JV Likely To Launch C-Segment SUV: Tata Harrier Rival

We informed you earlier that Maruti Suzuki is readying an all-new compact SUV to rival Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos for the Indian market. A new report claims that Suzuki and Toyota joint venture is also working on an all-new C-segment in India. The report hasn’t revealed more details about the product, but it is expected to be based on the Toyota’s Raize platform.

According to the Livemint, “Suzuki is expected to launch the new Jimny, a new mid-size SUV to rival Hyundai Creta, as well as two versions of the new Vitara Brezza and a C-segment SUV, being developed by Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corporation.”

The new SUV is expected to be offered in 5 and 7-seat layouts. It will be positioned against the likes of the Tata Harrier, MG Hector and the Mahindra XUV500. We believe that the upcoming Maruti-Suzuki C-SUV could be introduced as the new Grand Vitara; however, nothing has been officially released by the automaker. The new SUV is expected to be introduced by 2022-23. The company is also planning to bring back the BSVI compliant diesel cars in the country. It is reported that the Vitara Brezza, XL6 and the Ertiga will receive the BSVI compliant 1.5-litre diesel engine. In the BS4 form, this engine produces 94bhp and 225Nm of torque.

However, this engine will be smaller and less powerful for a C-segment SUV. We believe that the JV could source a bigger capacity diesel engine to power the SUV. The Tata Harrier and the MG Hector are powered by a Fiat-sourced 2.0L MJD diesel engine that produces 170bhp of power and 350Nm of torque.

The petrol version could use the existing 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 103bhp and 138Nm of torque. Previous reports suggest that Maruti Suzuki is also working on an all-new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine to power its upcoming Hyundai Creta rival SUV. Suzuki could also use the 1.4-litre Boosterjet engine that offers 138bhp of power.
