Launched in early October 2020, the second-generation Mahindra Thar has been doing really well for the carmaker in the country. The carmaker managed to dispatch over 2,500 units of the compact off-road SUV within first month of its arrival. Recently, the new Thar was subjected to the Global NCAP crash test and scored 4 star safety rating. Usually, the safety watchdogs test base variant of the models. In new Mahindra Thar’s case, the organization picked the top-end trim with alloy wheels that place a higher load on the firewall than steel wheels.
The new Thar’s tested model has the side-facing seats. Speaking to Autocar, Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Global NCAP, revealed that the company had decided to remove the side facing seat option and it would not be offered by the time the results of the crash test were published. This is the reason why the organization chosen the top-end variant of the new Mahindra Thar. If the company plans to reintroduce the side facing seats, Global NCAP will cancel its 4-star safety rating and retest the model with the bench seats layout.
Therefore, Mahindra & Mahindra might permanently remove the side facing seats configuration from the Thar model lineup. Compared to the previous model, the new Mahindra Thar offers better room for occupants. The model lineup comes in two variants – AX and LX – packed with 2.0L turbo petrol and 2.2L turbo diesel engines. Both manual and automatic gearboxes are on offer.
