Mahindra has recently launched the new-gen Scorpio N SUV, which is based on a ladder-on-frame chassis. The structure is basically the heavily modified version of the 3-door Thar’s platform. Mahindra is also working on the 5-door Thar, which is scheduled to be launched in 2023. A new media report claims that the new Mahindra Thar 5-door model will be based on the new Scorpio-N’s platform.
The new Mahindra Scorpio N comes with a hugely improved handling and ride quality, especially at highway speeds. The revamped platform comes with increased length and has wider track. The biggest difference is the increased stiffness, which results into more stable driving experience on high speeds. In fact, 81 percent of the Scorpio N’s ladder-frame is made of high-strength steel. The new Scorpio-N comes with an all-new Penta-link rear suspension for improved ride quality.
The report claims that Mahindra has confirmed that the Thar 5-door version will be based on the stiffer platform that was developed for the Scorpio N. The company will make some changes depending on the length. It is also likely to get the same pentalink rear suspension at the rear. However, the 5-door Thar will be shorter than the Scorpio N.
Due to stiffer platform, new penta-link suspension and wider track, the new Mahindra Thar 5-door should offer more stability on the road than the 3-door model. The 3-door Thar sits under 4 meters in length, while the 5-door model will measure around 4.3 meters in length. The Scorpio N measures 4.7 meters in length, and has 60mm wider track than the Thar. The LWB model will be a more practical offering with more space for rear occupants and luggage.
The 5-door Mahindra Thar will use the same 2.0l turbo petrol and 2.2L turbo diesel engines that powers the outgoing model. However, the powertrains will be calibrated for extra power and torque. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
The new Mahindra Thar 5-door model is expected to be unveiled at the 2023 Auto Expo in January. It will also receive two new rivals in the form of the 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny and the 5-door Force Gurkha. Both these models are also expected to be launched in 2023.
