Launched in 2020, the Mahindra Thar is the best-selling 3-door lifestyle SUV in the country. The company has already delivered close to 60,000 units in the past 2 years. Adding to it, Mahindra has close to 25,000 pending orders to be delivered in the near future. A new media report claims that Mahindra will also introduce a wide range of new versions under the Thar nameplate. The company is preparing a 5-door version of the Thar, which is expected to be launched in 2023. Adding to it, Mahindra will also launch multiple special editions of the lifestyle SUV.
Mahindra Thar 5-door
Mahindra had confirmed the 5-door version of the Thar SUV in 2021. It is expected that a more practical 5-door Thar lifestyle SUV will be launched in 2023. The SUV could be unveiled at the 2023 Auto Expo in January. The new 5-door model will longer than the 2-door Thar. Not just length, the SUV will ride on a longer wheelbase as compared to the 2-door model.
The current model has rear seats, but it is not a family car due to lack of space for adults and no luggage space. A five-door model would offer a combination of both – offering ruggedness and more space for rear occupants and luggage. It is also expected to come with a metal hard top.
The 5-door Mahindra Thar will use the same 2.0l turbo petrol and 2.2L turbo diesel engines that powers the outgoing model. However, the powertrains will be calibrated for extra power and torque. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
Special Editions
Mahindra is also likely to introduce limited editions of the standard Thar. The report claims that Mahindra could take inspiration from Jeep which offers multiple special editions of the Wrangler such as Moab Edition, trail-rated variants. The special editions of Thar could receive cosmetic and mechanical updates. The company could also use some historic badges such as the ‘Major’ and the ‘Commander’.
The new special edition Thars are likely to get lifted suspension, off-roading tyres and wheels, new external headlights and towing systems along with improved approach and departure angles. Visual changes could include new body graphics and more prominent cladding.
