Kia Motors India has been doing wonders in terms of sales. The South Korean carmaker started its Indian operations with Seltos compact SUV, which was followed by the Carnival luxury MPV and Sonet subcompact SUV. In October 2020, the company registered total sales of 21,021 units as opposed to 8,167 units, recording a growth of 63.53 per cent. It’s the highest ever monthly sales reported by the South Korean carmaker so far.
The Kia Seltos has been a tough competitor for the new Hyundai Creta. Both models have a marginal sales difference. In order to tap the highly competitive SUV segment, the carmaker recently launched the Kia Sonet that has been receiving overwhelming response from buyers. Within the first month of its launch, the Sonet became the top-selling subcompact SUV in the country. Its sales figures for the October month, however, are yet to be revealed by the carmaker.
The Kia Sonet comes with two variant lines – Tech Line and GT Line – and multiple engine and gearbox combinations. Its engine setup includes two petrol and a diesel motor. There is a 1.2-litre, naturally aspirated unit generating power worth 83bhp and 115Nm of torque. It comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox, which is limited to the lower trim levels. The compact SUV is also available with a 1.0-litre, turbo-petrol engine that’s good enough for 120bhp and 175Nm of torque. Powering the diesel model is a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged unit paired to a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. When fitted with the manual unit, it delivers 100bhp with 240Nm. It offers 115bhp with 250Nm with the automatic transmission. Currently, the Kia Sonet is the only car in its segment to offer the diesel – torque converter automatic gearbox combination.
