Hyundai Creta has been ruling the sales chart since its generation change in the country. Competition in the mid-size SUV space is getting fiercer with the arrival of new models including the Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun and MG Astor. In coming years, car manufacturers such as Honda and Maruti-Toyota will also foray into this segment to challenge dominance of the Creta. Here’s a brief on the upcoming Hyundai Creta rivals.
Honda RS Concept
The Japanese automaker recently unveiled the Honda RS concept at this year’s GIIAS Auto Show in Indonesia. Reports suggest that the RS concept based model will be a mid-size SUV that will be placed against the Creta (if launched in India). Measuring around 4.2 meters in length, the new Honda SUV shares some of its design elements with the new BR-V. For power, the model might use the 1.5L, 4-cylinder i-VTEC petrol engine that’s good enough for 121bhp and 145Nm. It could also be offered with the 1.5L petrol motor with Honda’s e:HEV mild hybrid system. It’s the same powertrain that will be used in the upcoming Honda City Hybrid sedan that’s due for early next year. Both manual and CVT automatic gearboxes will be on offer.
Maruti-Toyota SUV
Maruti Suzuki will introduce a new mid-size SUV under its partnership with Toyota. The model will be manufactured at Toyota’s Bidadi based facility and its launch is likely to happen sometime in 2022. It’s reported to underpin Toyota’s DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) that has been designed especially for the emerging markets. Under the hood, it might feature Suzuki’s tried and tested 1.5L petrol engine with a stronger hybrid system generating power worth 104bhp with 138Nm. Maruti’s new mid-size SUV could also be made available with the 1.2L turbocharged petrol motor or a 1.4L Boosterjet engine. The latter one already does duty in the global-spec Suzuki Swift Sport.
