New Maruti-Toyota SUV (Creta Rival) To Aim For 5 Star GNCAP Rating

Maruti Suzuki is readying a wide range of cars for the Indian market. The company plans to give major updates and generation upgrades to its existing cars. Adding to it, MSIL is also preparing to launch all-new models including SUVs and Crossovers over the period of next 2-3 years.

The next big product from Maruti Suzuki will be a new mid-sized SUV, which will be positioned against the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and the MG Astor. It is reported that the SUV could also receive a 7-seater derivative, which will challenge the Tata Safari, Hyundai Alcazar and the Mahindra XUV700.

The new mid-sized SUV will be introduced by Toyota-Suzuki JV and is likely to be produced at Toyota’s Bidadi based plant. The JV will use the recently discontinued Yaris production line to produce the new SUV. It is expected to be launched in 2022. Maruti Suzuki is also aiming to achieve top 5 star Global NCAP rating.

While Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra are launching cars with higher safety standards, MSIL is facing heavy criticism for its poorly rated cars. Suzuki’s Baleno and the Swift hatchback have recently awarded zero stars in the Latin NCAP. The platform was reported unstable. Most of its cars are designed and developed on the lightweight HEARTECT platform.

It is reported that Maruti Suzuki’s future SUVs and hatchbacks wil come with improved safety and will aim at a five-star Global NCAP safety rating. This will also lead to increase in production cost. Maruti Suzuki will also focus on giving high-end features including connected car tech.

The new Toyota-Suzuki mid-sized SUV is likely to be based on Toyota’s DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) that also underpins the Toyota Raize sub-compact SUV. This platform is designed for emerging markets. The new SUV is likely to get the Suzuki’s tried & tested 1.5-litre petrol engine with a stronger hybrid system. In the current form, this engine produces 104bhp and 138Nm of torque. It was reported that Suzuki is also developing a 1.2L turbocharged petrol engine, which could power the new SUV. The company could also use the 1.4L Boosterjet engine that powers the global-spec Swift Sport.
