Citroen C21 (Sonet, Venue Rival) Testing Begins In India

We have reported earlier that Citroen is planning to tap the growing subcompact SUV segment with an all new model, codenamed Citroen C21. While the French carmaker will bring in the sub-4 metre SUV during 2021 festive season, it will start its Indian innings with the Citroen C5 Aircross early next year. The C21 will be the brand’s first made-in-India model based on its new Common Modular Platform (CMP).

PSA’s new architecture is compatible to different body styles and powertrains (including internal combustion and electric motors). It has also been optimized reducing CO2 emissions by leveraging all factors such as better aerodynamics, weight reduction, lower rolling resistance and optimized powertrains.

Citroen’s new subcompact SUV will also be launched on South American markets. Here, it’s likely to be offered with a 1.2L turbocharged petrol engine only. In August 2020, the Citroen Berlingo MPV was spotted testing with the same powertrain in the country. The report further suggests that Citroen’s 1.2L turbo petrol motor will be as fuel economical and refined as Maruti Suzuki’s engines. Initially, the subcompact SUV might be offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox only. An automatic transmission might come at a later stage.

In India, the Citroen C21 will take head-to-head against cars like Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300. CK Birla’s Thiruvallur based facility will serve as production hub for the upcoming C21 small SUV and C5 Aircross crossover.

Some of its key features will include split LED headlamps with DRLs, a hands-free tailgate, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, electronic parking brake, a powered driver’s seat, a 12.3-inch digital instrument screen and an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
