The 5-door Mahindra Thar is undoubtedly one of the biggest new car launches of 2023. While the home-grown SUV marker decided to skip the Auto Expo, it’s reported to unveil the off-road SUV on 26th January (i.e. Independence Day). While the SUV’s official debut date and launch timeline is yet to be confirmed by the carmaker, the report further states that it might go on sale in the second half of 2023.
In India, the 5-door Thar will go up against the upcoming 5-door Maruti Jimny and Force Gurkha. Compared to its 3-door version that’s priced between Rs 13.59 lakh – Rs 16.29 lakh, the model is likely to cost around Rs 90,000 – Rs 1 lakh higher. The carmaker is expected to use a new nameplate for the Thar’s long-wheelbase version.
Mahindra & Mahindra will introduce the 5-door Thar as lifestyle off-road SUV to target wider customer base. The SUV will sit on the extended wheelbase that will reduce its ‘breakover’ angle. The carmaker might increase the width between the wheels to maintain an optimum wheelbase to track ratio for ensuring better stability. For power, the new 5-door Mahindra Thar will use the 2.2L mHawk diesel and 2.0L mStallion petrol engines that do duty in the 3-door version. Though, both motors could be retuned for generating higher power and torque outputs. It can be had with either a manual or an automatic gearbox. Unlike the 3-door Thar that comes with the standard 4X4 system, it might be offered with 4X4 and 4X2 drivetrain options.
Buyers might have option to choose from 6 and 7-seats configurations. Save for the extra cabin space, the interior layout and features of the new LWB Mahindra Thar are expected to be similar to its 3-door version.
