Maruti Suzuki is currently holds over 50% passenger vehicle market in India. The company has strong product portfolio when it comes to smaller vehicles including hatchbacks and sedans. The company lacks when it comes to SUVs. The company is currently selling Vitara Brezza and the S-Cross crossover in the SUV segment. However, things are likely to change in near future as MSIL is readying 3 new SUVs for the Indian market.
Next-gen Maruti Vitara Brezza
Maruti Suzuki will launch the next generation Vitara Brezza in the first half of 2022. The new SUV is rumoured to be introduced with multiple engine options including petrol with strong hybrid system, and diesel. The next-gen Brezza will be based on the modified version of the Suzuki’s HEARTECT platform, which will be compatible with advanced tech and modern features.
It will come equipped with modern connectivity features, improved touchscreen infotainment system and connected car tech. The SUV is likely to get wireless charger, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a factory-fitted sunroof. It will be powered by the 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine with a stronger hybrid system. It is expected to feature a larger battery and a more powerful electric motor to achieve higher fuel efficiency. The diesel version could receive the 1.5-litre engine with manual gearbox. The petrol version is also expected to get a 6-speed automatic gearbox instead of 4-speed torque convertor automatic.
5-door Suzuki Jimny
Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch the 5-door version of the Jimny lifestyle SUV in India by July 2022. The SUV will be produced at the brand’s Manesar based production plant. If reports are to be believed, the 5-door Jimny will have 300mm longer wheelbase, which will help in liberating more space inside the cabin. The length of the SUV will be increased by 300mm, while the ground clearance will stand at 210mm.
The India-spec model is most likely to get the 1.5L petrol engine with mild hybrid system. This engine is capable of producing 100bhp and 130Nm of torque. Transmission options are likely to include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque convertor automatic. The vehicle could also get a more powerful 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine with SHVS system.
New Mid-sized SUV
Maruti Suzuki and Toyota JV is working on a new mid-sized SUV, which is rumoured to be based on the Toyota’s low-cost DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) platform. This platform currently underpins the Toyota Raize and the Daihatsu Rocky. The new mid-sized SUV will rival the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq and the upcoming VW Taigun and the MG Astor. The new mid-sized SUV is expected to receive a turbocharged petrol engine with manual and automatic gearbox option.
