Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest carmaker in India, is the Indian subsidiary of the Japanese carmaker Suzuki. Earlier known as Maruti Udyog ltd., the company was founded in 1981 and car production commenced in 1983. Since it was government of India venture, GOI had 74 per cent stake while 26 per cent were owned by Suzuki which was responsible for the development of cars. However, GOI sold all of its stakes in 2007 and Suzuki now holds 56.21 per cent share in the company.
Currently, the company holds around 50 per cent market share in the Indian passenger car market and has 6 cars in the list of top 10 selling cars of 2015. In 2015, Maruti SUzuki launched its premium dealership range – Nexa – that currently sells only two products – Baleno and S-Cross. In 2015, the company rolled out several new and facelifted cars including its first-ever premium hatchback Baleno that became an instant hit. As a matter of fact, it outsold Hyundai Elite i20 in the first full month of its sales. The company’s another premium offering S-Cross, however, failed to live up to the company’s expectations. As a result, the company ahs been offering huge discounts on all the variants of the crossover.
In 2015, the Indo-Japanese carmaker also introduced the diesel version of the Maruti Celerio that features the country’s smallest diesel engine – a 796cc, 3-cylinder unit. The same engine might also power other Maruti SUzuki small cars.
