2021 Mahindra XUV500 Testing Resumes; To Rival Tata Gravitas

Mahindra & Mahindra is all set to launch the new-generation Thar off-road SUV in August, 2020. Unofficial bookings of the model have been commenced across the nation. The home-grown carmaker has also lined-up the next-generation Mahindra Scorpio and XUV500 SUVs for the early next year. In fact, the company has begun testing the 2021 Mahindra XUV500 post lockdown. The spotted test mule was heavily camouflaged, but its body panels appear close to the production model.

Design and styling of the all-new XUV500 will be more evolved and said to be inspired by the Mahindra Funster roadster concept that broke cover at this year’s Auto Expo. The SUV will also derive some of its design bits from the new SsangYong Korando. Most of the cosmetic updates will be made at the front end. The 2021 Mahindra XUV500 will feature a slimmer grille and XUV300-inspired LED projector headlamps with LED DRLs. There will also be a new set of LED taillamps.

Interior details are scanty. Though, the new-generation XUV500 is likely to feature a large 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system as we have seen in the SsangYong Korando. The SUV might also get a new digital instrument console, dual zone automatic climate control, panoramic sunroof along with new connected car technologies and internet features. The all-new XUV500 will underpin the all-new monocoque FWD (front-wheel-drive) platform. The same architecture will also be used in Ford’s upcoming C-SUV.

The new 2.0L mStallion turbocharged petrol engine will the biggest change made to the 2021 Mahindra XUV500. The petrol powertrain, that made its debut at the 2020 Auto Expo, will deliver close to 190bhp and 380Nm of torque. The SUV will also be available with a BS6-compliant 2.0-liter turbo diesel motor pushing out a peak power of 180bhp and 400Nm of torque. The model lineup will be offered with two gearbox options – a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic unit.
