Baojun’s 177bhp, 1.5L Turbo-Petrol Engine to Power MG, Wuling Cars

Baojun has released a new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 177bhp and 290Nm of torque; to power Wuling and MG products.

For people not in the know, Baojun, MG Motors and Wuling auto manufacturers are owned by the Chinese SAIC Motor Corporation. In fact, MG Hector available in our market, new Chevrolet Captiva and the Wuling Almaz SUVs are basically the re-badged versions of the Baojun 530 SUV. All these models are powered by the same 1500cc, 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine producing around 147bhp.

Interestingly, Baojun has released a new and more powerful 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. This engine is capable of producing 177bhp of maximum power and 290Nm of torque between 1,500 – 3,000rpm. This is significantly more powerful than the one available in the MG Hector or even in the Baojun 530 SUV. While powering the Almaz, the existing 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine produces 147bhp of power and 250Nm of torque. The power figure drops further in the Hector, offering 141bhp and 250Nm.

The new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine uses direct injection technology instead of the multi-point injection in the Hector’s 1500cc unit. It offers around 30bhp more power and 40Nm higher torque. This engine will first power the new Baojun RS-7, which is a 7-seater mid-sized crossover.

The new 1.5-litre engine uses the same Honeywell sourced turbocharger that is available in the current engine. The new engine will be paired to an 8-speed CVT automatic. The India-spec model also uses the 1.5L engine with 48V mild hybrid system and a DCT (Dual-Clutch Automatic Gearbox).

New 1.5L Turbo Petrol in India?

The MG Hector petrol is currently the least fuel efficient model in its category. With more powerful engine, the fuel efficiency figures could further go down. However, CVT transmission could help MG to maintain the right mileage for the SUV. We believe that the new engine is not likely to power the MG Hector 5-seater SUV. However, the 7-seater Hector Plus could get this engine in future. The company is yet to make an official announcement on the same.
