2020 Mahindra Thar Unveiled – Key Features Explained

The second-generation Mahindra Thar has finally been unveiled on the Independence day. The carmaker has confirmed that the SUV’s official prices will be announced on 2nd October, 2020. Its official bookings will also be commenced on the same day. With the generation change, the off-road SUV has witnessed significant cosmetic changes and feature upgrades along with new powertrain setup. Features such as updated suspension setup, 650mm water wading ability, 226mm ground clearance(unladen) and 37 degree departure and 47 degree approach angles make the 2020 Mahindra Thar a more capable, lifestyle-oriented SUV.

The newly-designed alloy wheels with black finish, wing mirrors with Thar engraving and tailgate mounted spare wheel and LED taillamps further mark distinction to its portfolio. The SUV’s new-generation model will be offered in hard-top (factory-fitted for the first time) and soft-top configurations.

In order to improve its cabin comfort, the carmaker has equipped several new goodies. The SUV has front facing rear seats with 50:50 split ratio for the first time and front seat with height and lumber support. There is an all-new dashboard with improved plastic quality and faux carbon fibre finish around the air con vents.

The new Mahindra Thar 2020 offers a new automatic climate control feature along with a new steering wheel with audio, phone and cruise mounted controls, multi coloured TFT display in the new instrument cluster, well-bolstered seats, new switch controls and toggles.

The 2020 Mahindra Thar comes equipped with a touchscreen infotainment system that’s likely to support both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. On the safety front, the new Thar have more fitments to offer including hill start assist, electronic stability program, dual front airbags, speed alert system, rear parking sensors, ABS (anti-lock braking system), seat belt alert and more.

The 2020 Mahindra Thar will come with a choice of petrol and diesel engines. The petrol variant will be packed with the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol mStallion motor (150bhp/320Nm) and the diesel version will feature the 2.2-litre turbo diesel unit (130bhp/320Nm).

Both engines will get a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, while a new 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission will be an optional offering. The SUV will come with the 4WD (four-wheel-drive) system, a differential-lock and limited-slip functionalities.
