As per data released by SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers), car sales in September 2016 have hit the 54-month high. With a total sales of 2.78 lakh units, passenger cars recorded an year-on-year growth of 20 percent.
While the entry-level hatchbacks and the B segment continued to do well, the utility vehicles (UVs) too contributed a major chunk in the overall sales. Success of Maruti Vitata Brezza, Hyundai Creta and Toyota Innova Crysta powered the UV segment record a total sales of 66,851 units in the month.

Key Highlights
1. Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the Indian passenger vehicle market in September too. The Indo-Japanese carmaker currently has 6 cars in the list of top 10 selling cars. While the Alto, WagonR and the Swift twins kept on doing well this month as well, the Baleno and Vitara Brezza’s superb performance helped the company achieve 49.5% market share in the month.
2. The sales gap between the two premium hatchbacks – Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Hyundai Elite i20 – once again remained quite narrow. The Baleno managed to sell 369 more units than the Elite i20.
3. The compact SUV segment is the new hot favourite among buyers, and it’s also visible in the best selling cars’ list for the month. Maruti Vitara Brezza and Hyundai Creta retained their positions with a total sales of 9,375 and 8,835 units respectively.
4. The Kwid is the only non-Maruti/Hyundai car in the list, as Renault India managed to sell 10,558 units of its entry-level hatchback.
