We reported earlier that Fiat is working on the next generation Punto hatchback. If media reports are to be believed, the next generation Punto could be the new member of 500 family. Yes, the Italian manufacturing is considering the 500 nameplate for the Punto hatchback and other Fiat cars.
The 500 first introduced as an iconic small car, but later it followed the foot steps of the Mini range. Now, the 500 range includes the 500L, 500L MPV and the new 500X crossover. The company is aiming to further strengthen the 500 nameplate, and it could serve several new and larger models.
Fiat’s designer Roberto Giolito, said “In our line-up of models, the Punto occupies a special place in the B-segment. It’s a pretty aged model, but it’s still a good seller”. “The matter is how to introduce a possible new hatchback in this category, in this place. And why not this could be also 500?” He further added.
According to Giolito, the decision on whether new Punto to get 500 badge is under management control. A five-door Fiat 500 is likely to go into production, and would come as a replacement for the aging Punto hatchback.
