Worst NCAP Safety Rating Cars In India – 4 Maruti

Launched in 2014, the #SaferCarsForIndia campaign has surely spread the much-needed awareness among car buyers about the safety of vehicles they buy. Under this programme Global NCAP has tested over 50 made-in-India, made-for-India models. The Tata Nexon was the first made-in-India vehicle to receive 5-star safety rating from the agency. From there onwards, the number of safe vehicles have only gone up. Cars like Tata Punch, Altroz, Mahindra XUV300, XUV700, Thar and now the new Scorpio N have performed really well in the crash tests conducted by Global NCAP. Yet there are multiple unsafe cars on sale in India. Here, we take a look at some made-in-India cars with worst Global NCAP safety ratings.

Maruti Swift/Ignis/S-Presso – 1 Star (As per new standard)

The Maruti Swift, Ignis and S-Presso were recently tested under the new and updated Global NCAP crash test standards. While the Swift hatchback received 1 star for adult protection and child protection, the Ignis and S-Presso scored 1 star for adult protection and 0 for child protection. The Swift scored 19.19 points out of 34 and 16.68 out of 49 in adult and child occupant protection respectively. The Maruti Ignis achieved 16.48 points out of 34 in the adult occupant protection and and 3.86 points out of 49 in child occupant protection. The Maruti S-Presso secured 20.03 out of 34 points in adult occupant protection and just 3.52 out of 49 points in child occupant protection. GNCAP noted that the bodyshell and footwell area of all three Maruti cars were unstable and not capable of withstanding any further loadings. More details here…

Maruti WagonR – 2 Star (As per old standard)

Global NCAP published the Maruti Suzuki WagonR’s crash test safety rating in October 2019. The hatchback achieved a poor 2 stars rating with 6.93 points out of 17 and 16.33 out of 49 points for adult and child occupant protection respectively. Its structure was rated as unstable and not capable of withstanding further loadings. The agency tested the entry-level 1.0L LXi variant that comes with the standard driver’s airbag. It missed out on features such as Isofix anchorages and a three-point seatbelt for the middle seat passenger. More details here…

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios – 2 Star (As per old standard)

Hyundai’s Grand i10 Nios hatchback was crash tested in November 2020, and it received just 2 stars safety rating. The GNCAP results states that the model’s structure and footwell area were unstable. It got 2 stars for adult and child protection. The Grand i10 Nios provided good head and neck protection for adult occupant. While its chest protection for driver was weak, its adequate for the front passenger. The crash test showed poor protection for a 3-year-old and better for an 18-month-old occupant. The test model was equipped with the standard dual airbags and seat belt for both front occupants. More details here…

Renault Kwid – 1 Star (As per old standard)

In its initial test, the Renault Kwid got a zero star rating. Though, the carmaker submitted its improved version that awarded with one star safety rating by Global NCAP in September 2016. It received zero star for adult occupant protection and 2 stars for child occupant protection. It showed high chest deflection. The tested model was equipped with safety features such as an airbag and seat belt pre-tensioners for the driver’s seat. The tested model was made-in-India and sold in South Africa.
