Maruti WagonR Scores Just 2 Stars in Global NCAP Crash Test

Global NCAP has recently tested four cars currently on sale in our market, and the segment-leading Maruti Suzuki WagonR was one of the models in the list. Global NCAP has tested the entry-level, 1.0L LXi variant of the new Wagon R for the crash test. This variant comes equipped with driver-side airbag along with mandatory safety features. The tall-boy hatchback only scored 6.93 points out of 17 for adult occupant protection. For child occupant protection, the hatch scored just 16.33 points out of 49.

According to the Global NCAP report, the new generation Wagon R structure is ‘unstable’ and is ‘not capable of withstanding further loadings.’ The protection for the front occupants is rated ‘good’, while protection for the chest area is rated ‘weak.’ Adding to it, the protection for the legs is rated ‘marginal.’ Read – Hyundai Santro Gets 2 Stars In Global NCAP Crash Test

In the findings, Global NCAP stated that the child restraint system was broke on impact during crash test, which results in the 3 year old child dummy heating the front seats hard. Adding to it, the head and chest protection for the 18 month old child is rated good and vulnerable respectively. The Wagon R hatchback comes with driver-side airbag, ABS with EBD, brake assist, rear parking sensors and speed alert as standard safety features. The passenger side airbag is available as optional. Government of India is all set to make passenger-side airbag as mandatory. For people not in the known, the new Wagon R meets Indian crash test standards. In India, the cars are tested at a lower speeed of 56kmph as against 64kmph used by Global NCAP to crash test cars.
