Upcoming New Tata Cars To Launch In India – EVs, SUVs

Buoyed by positive response for new breed of cars, Tata Motors is now planning to launch a wide range of new cars and electric vehicles in the country. The company is eyeing at second spot in the list of top car manufacturers, as it closes gap between Hyundai India.

Tata Motors will also launch the next generations of its popular cars including the Nexon and the Tiago. Both models will be based on the new Agile Light Flexible Architecture (ALFA) that underpins the new Punch and the Altroz hatchback. These models are expected to be launched sometime in 2022-23.

Tata Motors is also planning to expand its electric vehicle line-up. The company has announced to create a new EV subsidiary, and entered an agreement with the investment firm TPG Rise Climate. It will invest 7,500 crore for 11 percent to 15 percent stake in the new EV firm, which has an equity valuation of around $9.1 billion. The new company is temporarily called the EVCo, and the new name will be announced soon.

The company has officially announced to have 10 electric vehicles in its portfolio by Financial year 2026. The next two EVs from homegrown automaker are the Altroz EV and the Punch based EV. The Altroz EV has already been showcased to public at the 2020 Auto Expo.

Tata Altroz EV Specs

The Tata Altroz EV is expected to feature the same electric powertrain that powers the Nexon EV. It has an IP67 certified 30.2kWh battery pack with a permanent magnet AC motor. It is likely to offer a range between 250km and 300km, and the battery could take around 1 hour to achieve 80% charging using DC fast charging.

The Tata Punch based micro EV is expected to be the brand’s cheapest electric model in our market. It is also likely to source the electric powertrain with the Nexon EV. It should offer a range of over 300km.

The company is also planning to introduce the diesel version of the Punch. It is expected to be powered by a 1.5L diesel engine that produces  89bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. For transmission duties, the small SUV could get a 5-speed manual or an AMT. Adding to it, the small SUV could also get a turbo-charged 1.2L petrol engine that churns out 109bhp and 140Nm of torque.

Tata is also working on a new 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine to power its bigger models. This engine is likely to produce close to 150bhp of power and 250Nm of torque. It will power the Safari and the Harrier; however, exact launch timeline is yet to be revealed.
