Upcoming MG Electric SUV (Nexon EV Rival) – What We Know So Far

MG Motor India recently announced that its next product launch will be an electric SUV, which is slated to arrive by March 2023. The new MG electric SUV will be positioned against India’s top-selling electric car – Tata Nexon EV. It will be the fifth offering from the British automaker in the country. The automaker has also revealed that the company is planning to localize components (such as battery assembly and motor) for its upcoming EV.

Crossover-ish Design

The new MG electric SUV will carry crossover-ish stance and underpin a global platform. Rajeev Chaba, President and MD, MG Motor India, has revealed that the brand’s global architecture has been designed and developed especially for emerging markets. The upcoming MG EV will be customized to meet Indian regulations and customers’ requirements.

Small Battery Pack

Compared to the MG ZS EV, the new MG electric SUV will have lower capacity battery pack. It will serve to customers who prefer lower range electric car at affordable pricing. Official powertrain details are still under the wraps and are expected to be revealed in coming months.

Just so you know, the MG ZS EV comes with a 44.5kWh, liquid-cooled battery offering an ARAI-certified range of Rs 340km. It has an IP-67 certified lithium-ion battery pack, which is water resistance up to depth of 1 metre for 30 minutes. The ZS EV offers three drive modes and three levels of regenerative braking. The electric SUV supports both Type 2 (AC) and European CCS (DC) charging methods.

Affordable Pricing

The British automaker has confirmed that the electric SUV will be priced between Rs 10 lakh – Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom). As mentioned above, it will directly take on the Tata Nexon EV that’s currently available within the price range of Rs 13.99 lakh – Rs 16.85 lakh.

MG is also reported to bring in electric hatchback and a four-seater version of the Baojun E200 EV (MG E200) that was previewed at the 2020 Auto Expo.
