MG Air, the upcoming 2-door electric car from the British automaker, is ready to make its debut at the 2023 Auto Expo in January. The carmaker is also reported to showcase the MG 4 EV at the biennial event. Based on the China-spec Wuling Air EV, the new MG electric car is said to be premium than the Tata Tiago EV. Its prices are likely to start from Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). The model is reported to enter into production in March 2023. The company aims to manufacture 36,000 units on annual basis.
For power, the new MG electric car is likely to use a battery pack ranging between 20kWh – 25kWh. It will deliver power close to 40bhp and offer an electric range of around 150km. The battery pack will contain LFP cylindrical cells as we have seen in the Tata Nexon EV. These cells are lighter and more charge efficient and no maintenance than the NMC cells. MG will be source batteries locally from Tata AutoComp. The Air EV will have FWD (front-wheel drive) system. It will measure around 2.9 meters in length and sit on a 2010mm long wheelbase.
The MG Air EV is based on the brand’s new Global Small Electric Vehicles (GSEV) platform and carries tall and boxy stance. It has squarish headlamps, slim fog lamp assembly and angular front bumper. The small hood has a black strip and a light bar in the middle running across its front to ORVMs. The new MG electric car rides on 12-inch steel rims with plastic hub caps. It has a charging port door and small taillamps.
With respect to safety, the 2-door MG EV will offer a dual 10.25-inch displays – one for the infotainment and one for instrumentation. It will also come with the automatic climate control, keyless entry, connected car tech and steering mounted controls.
