The much-awaited Maruti Jimny 5-door off-road SUV is scheduled to make India debut at the 2023 Auto Expo. It has already been spotted testing multiple times on the Indian roads. Ahead of the official debut, new details about the engine and off-road gear of the lifestyle SUV have been revealed on the Internet.
It was speculated that the Jimny 5-door will be powered by Brezza-sourced 1.5L Dualjet K15C petrol engine with a mild hybrid tech. However, a new report claims that the lifestyle SUV will be offered with the older K15B engine that powers the 3-door Jimny in select markets. The 1462cc engine is capable of producing 102bhp and 130Nm of torque. This engine is most likely to be mated with mild-hybrid tech, which will allow the SUV to achieve higher efficiency and lower emission figures. Transmission options in the 3-door Jimny include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque convertor automatic. Both gearbox options are offered with Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro AWD system.
The older 1.5L K15B petrol engine currently powers the Ciaz sedan. In fact, the Ertiga facelift and Jimny 3-door for export markets are also powered by the older K15B unit. The older K15B series engine is expected to reduce the cost of production. A large chunk of the production of the 5-door Jimny will be exported to markets where stricter emission norms are not introduced.
Instead of a 4-speed automatic gearbox, the India-spec Maruti Jimny 5-door is likely to get a new 6-speed torque convertor unit. This gearbox has recently been introduced in newer Maruti Suzuki models including the Brezza, Grand Vitara, Ertiga and the XL6. It will come with Suzuki’s All Grip Pro 4-wheel-drive tech, which is more capable than the AllGrip AWD setup offered on the Grand Vitara. The AllGrup Pro 4WD setup has a low-ratio gear that multiplies engine torque and limits speed. Driver can switch between two-wheel-drive high (2H) and four-wheel-drive high (4H) for off-road conditions. For extreme off-road conditions, the SUV will have four-wheel-drive low (4L).
Previous report suggest that the Jimny lifestyle SUV for India will measure 3,850mm in length, 1,645mm in width and 1,730mm in height, and 2,550mm wheelbase. Compared to the Jimny Sierra, the 5-door Jimny will have 300mm longer wheelbase and the overall length will be increased by 300mm.
